Great reinforcement
I’ve read Positive Discipline for Preschoolers and learned a lot from that book, but I felt that I needed to work on myself more than on how to raise a preschooler. There is a lot of valuable information in this book, and all the new and refresher information could be overwhelming, but as they have said before, it’s important to take one new skill and implement it for a while and continue to do one new skill at a time as needed. What I believe has helped me the most from this book, and where I needed to work on the most, was on “connecting before correcting.” I am making a conscious change to try getting an understanding of my son’s behavior before getting upset, and I believe it will make a difference. I have seen positive responses from my son when I approach the situation this way, rather than how I have been before.I would encourage everyone to read this book to understand how to more effectively deal with relationships with children, and even with others in daily life.

Best positive discipline book for busy parents
I love, love, love this book. I took positive discipline course 2 years ago, and I read the original at that time. I got this book from the library for a refresher. It is fabulous. It has 49 short 5-minute chapters. It is perfect to read on a short break, and you can get something from it every time you turn from it. I like to read it during bedtime to help me stay on course and not lose my temper. It’s fabulous for giving me new tools and keeping me in the positive discipline mindset.

Helpful for Frustrated Parents
The tools in this book really work! So many communication tools that can improve the family experience for everyone. The Audible version is great too, but it’s helpful to have the bookfor referencing the charts.

Worth the buy. Would recommend.
Kitties I’ve only read the first 15 pages or so and already found it somewhat helpful. I think that Love and Logic will work better for my family, but the reflections about motivations and reactions in this book are very insightful and helpful to add to the advice i already have.

Good ideas for soft discipline
Great touchy-feely book about discipline. Goes well paired with any alternate book from author Ray Guerendi.

As the title suggests, the 49 tools from the Positive Parenting series by Jane Nelsen is an invaluable guide that explains and teaches the ideas behind positive discipline. Every chapter deals with one specific tool and is divided into four parts: a general one, Jane Nielsen’s view, her daughter Mary’s and her son Brad’s view, followed by success stories by Positive Discipline Trainers and Educators (I have to admit these workshops and the degrees and certificates and everything do sound a wee bit cult-y to me, but I guess everyone has to make a living and Jane Nelsen and her family seem to have found their niche). In my mind, the book can be viewed as the good, the bad and the middle ground of parenting. I imagine Jane Nelsen to be the kind of grandmother every child wants. She’s kind and understanding, but also firm, basically the embodiment of positive parenting. Brad seems to have been added for comic relief and often sounds like he doesn’t really know what he’s doing. In every chapter we are reminded that he’s a single dad and by what he is saying it sounds like he’d rather be golfing than engaging with his children. I strongly suspect that his stories are often greatly exaggerated so that the reader does not feel inadequate but rather relieved that they’re not the only ones doing things wrong. Mary seems to be the middle ground. Firm in her beliefs but still making mistakes from time to time, which is exactly what parenting is. It’s impossible to not make any mistakes while bringing up a child but with these tools you can try your best. I’m absolutely convinced that positive discipline is the right way to go and I am extremely happy to have found these books while my son is still a toddler so that I can implement as many as possible. I have read several books in this series and this is my favourite. You obviously have to pick whatever works best for your family and there are one or two things I do not agree with within the PP-approach, for example I am strongly opposed to the sleep training or the Ferber method which is encouraged in Jane Nelsen’s other book, Positive Parenting A-Z, at least in the older version I own, but since it does not appear in this book I will not deduct any stars. The tools have made me more relaxed and have helped me focus on the bond I have with my son. I am convinced that he will benefit from all of the changes and the kind but firm approach. All in all, a fantastic book and a great parenting approach. Thanks a lot to the authors.
