Winner of the National Outdoor Book Award.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of when Dick Proenneke first broke ground and made his mark in the Alaskan wilds in 1968, this bestselling memoir features an all-new foreword by Nick Offerman plus color photographs not seen in print for over 20 years.
To live in a pristine land unchanged by man…to roam a wilderness through which few other humans have passed…to choose an idyllic site, cut trees, and build a log cabin…to be a self-sufficient craftsman, making what is needed from materials available…to be not at odds with the world, but content with one’s own thoughts and company…
Thousands have had such dreams, but Dick Proenneke lived them. He found a place, built a cabin, and stayed to become part of the country. One Man’s Wilderness is a simple account of the day-to-day explorations and activities he carried out alone, and the constant chain of nature’s events that kept him company. From Dick’s journals, and with firsthand knowledge of his subject and the setting, Sam Keith has woven a tribute to a man who carved his masterpiece out of the beyond.

An adventure for the whole family
I saw the video on PBS many years ago and it really stuck with me (who hasn’t had the itch to just chuck it all and disappear into the wilds?), so I had to get this book when I came across it on my suggested reading list. I’m so glad I did! Based off Dick Proenneke’s journals, the reader is instantly teleported into the Alaskan bush through Mr. Proenneke’s laconic storytelling of time spent carving out his homestead all alone, other than when Babe flies in with supplies. From detailing how he built his cabin, to exploring the surrounding countryside, to a close encounter with a curious bear, this is a timeless story about slowing down and enjoying Life’s simple pleasures. It is a perfect read for the whole family.

Every adventurers’ dream!
Starting in 1970, I lived in the Yukon, northern BC, and Alaska for 15 years this book was an excellent reminder of those years and filled me with nostalgia for them. I lived in many cabins and even built one, however they never looked as tight and well built as his. Well written, with wonderful pictures, and a great read.

Amazing and beautiful story
I had no idea what to expect when I started reading. I got hooked right away. I became a fan of this beautiful place and the kind, gentle soul of Dick. His journey was amazing and inspiring. I wish I had the resolve to do what he did.

Let it lead you
With the sound of rain outside, I read in the comfort of home, sipping chamomile tea and nibbling toast. It’s relaxing. The book is nicely written. A good use of word imagery. Easy reading. The pictures alone are worth the price. The daily entries lead my mind to follow his journey as if I’m nearby watching. It inspires me to go out and do my own “woods projects”.It’s not a book to rush through. It should be savored and enjoyed. If you appreciate a man’s good work you will appreciate this book.

Great story, great quality book.
Everyone loves this story. The story will not get any better regardless of the book. However, this specific edition is great. It has a nice thick weather resistance structure to it. Meaning that if you want to take this book on camping trips or out in the rain while you read about those great adventures, the book will endure.

An Alaskan Odyssey You Won’t Want to Miss
I purchased this book for a gift. This person is fascinated with Dick Proenneke’s adventures in Alaska. The unique way in which Mr. Proenneke recorded his 1960’s Alaska odyssey in a diary and on film is incredible.

Always been a fan of the short documentary by the two guys, so was only a matter of time before I got my hands on the book. Great read, pictures are spectacular, and an amazing story. Book is great for a camping trip, as the pages are water resistant, great planning by the author(s)/publisher.

I loved this book. It inspired me and kept me page turning as I stepped into a world, as yet unknown to me. I loved the images as not only does it show the pride in a man’s work it also showed the love he has of all things nature. From forests, mountains, lakes and all living within them, it was a great pleasure to join him on this amazing experimental experience. Not only did you succeed with your personal ambition , you did it with bells on. I salute and thank you for writing your journal and for taking me along with you.

Enjoyed every word. Another time and another place. How the world has changed since this man lived his wonderful way of life. I hated to leave with him and felt a real sense of loss just reading the leaving, the closing of a chapter. He went back though.

A beautiful diary log – simple, honest and endearing. Exceptional photography- it was done on film! Don’t waste your time on Walden- this book says it all more beautifully and in clear direct language. One of the best books on wilderness. And a man’s thoughts. All alone in the wild.
