How the OFA Predicts the Weather
Secret Weather Formula The Old Farmer’s Almanac has predicted the weather since our founding in 1792, when George Washington was president and actively farming at Mount Vernon.OFA founder Robert B. Thomas believed that Earth’s weather was influenced by sunspots, which are magnetic storms on the surface of the Sun, and this factored heavily in his forecasts.
Long-Range Forecasts
We predict weather trends and events by comparing solar patterns and historical weather conditions with current solar activity. We employ three disciplines to make our long-range predictions:
solar science, the study of sunspots and other solar activity;climatology, the study of prevailing weather patterns; and meteorology, the study of the atmosphere.
Teleconnections
We also use climate signals, called teleconnections, to help make our long-range weather forecasts. These links between weather phenomena at different locations on Earth affect climate patterns spanning thousands of miles—think El Niño/La Niña. Due to climate change, teleconnections can change over time and may not be as effective as they were in the past.

The good ole Farmers Almanac never lets me down. Also full of useful information and tidbits to cover every aspect of the weather, moon phases, star alignments, and interesting, helpful and useful information to plan your year around, planting schedules around the country for wherever you live. Useful, fun, helpful and a must have. More accurate than the most seasoned and experienced Meteorologist around. I sometimes wonder if the weather forecasters ever pic up a “Farmers Almanac” or look out the window!

Full of lots of wisdom and fun as well as the weather predictions.
I buy one of these every year. I really have found that their predictions are generally pretty good, but even more than that it is chock full of fun things to read and learn. The advice on gardening includes a lot of old time advice. I have found it helpful in planning the timing of planting and harvest.

I have bought The Old Farmer’s Almanac for decades now. The information in it is very expansive and valuable. I can take it anywhere in the world and use it with a very easy understanding about where you are on the face of the Earth. I have used it in Australia and Europe and Japan and many places in North America East West and South Coasts. It is a basic navigational tool for oceanic subjects. You can predict what phase of the moon you can see on what evening and if the tide you might want in a picture is where you need to be at what time and date. Having said all this praise you also Have to understand local topographies for the most accurate event timings though.

This final edition is beautifully put together (as always!) and stays true to everything that made the Almanac special. I’m grateful for one more issue, but I’ll be missing this classic resource so, so much!!
