This is an awesome beginners book to photography.
I really love this photography book. For a homeschool family- my 12 yr old daughter can use it independently. I love how vibrant the cover of the book is. It is well designed. The pages have been organized in such a way it easy to follow or take your time as you get use to all the functions of your camera. It is easy to read and understand. The picture examples are wonderful to follow along. It is a written to be a 20 week course so definitely it can be stretched, especially if you can travel and spend time in the outdoor to practice on a photo shoot project. We do not have a DSLR camera but a point and shoot. I would highly recommend this book. At the end of each chapter, there is a short review and questions. They highly encourage you practice each function and be familiar with the symbols and the meanings. They teach what functions are best at what type of settings and when to use them. Great book!

    GOOD BOOK
Good book easy read, it’s not like fun to read there isn’t jokes so it can get boring to read.It explains the stuff pretty good though for me i had to check up what some stuff that it said but didn’t explain are but most is explained. The pic’s in it are mad nice, the book itslef is strong and the paper is thick and good qaulity.I went ahead of the course bec it want to slow for me.The stuff it tells you to pratice lot’s of times isn’t realistc for me lots of them have you geting a model or going some where this is why i gave it 4 stars. It is a beginners book not for amutars. Oh and the editing it teaches is pretty sweet. . I like it but think this book isn’t the best book a beginner should get.

A good beginning book that explains photography simply and basically…
I just cracked the book today and I think if you want to learn photography, this would probably be the most simplest best way of doing it… it deals with just the facts and it keeps everything simple so yeah, I would recommend this book

Great book for learning how to take better photos!
This is a great book for beginners or near-beginners at photography. Each module (e.g. exposure, contrast, depth of field) is laid out like a week-long class with a pre-assessment, explanation of the theory, specific examples of what to do to adjust the topic at hand, then “assignments” (ideas for practice), self-assessment at the end, and tips for post-production. Each module is followed with a review of “what you have learned” with a quiz that you can take or skip. The book is laid out very well with easy-to-read diagrams, chunks of text, pictures, examples, etc. It’s very easy to follow. It does not cover things 100% in-depth, but it told me what I needed to ask Google (e.g. I was curious about the origin of ISO and how it translates to digital photography, and I needed more information on spot-metering, so I augmented).I bought this book because I wanted to become better at photography this year. I have a middle-of-the-road DSLR camera and I know SOME things, but not how or why they work. As an example, I knew that a higher ISO made my picture lighter, but not why. I also knew how to change aperture, and what it did, but I didn’t really know how to combine these things in certain situations. Rather, I’d experiment until I found a picture I liked, then hope that what I saw on my screen was what would actually turn out! It’s a hefty book, but useful to pick and choose modules to learn when I realize that I don’t understand them! I definitely recommend!

The book is very comprehensive and covers a lot of ground. It covers the technical matters well. The key here is practice. You need to take one concept at a time and practice it using the camera for at least one or two days to internalize the skills. Things like composition, color combination, Black and white etc can be done on the mobile phone.Once you master the technical matters like composition, exposure, lighting, contrast, Lenses, histogram, filters, editing etc. Then I suggest you read “The Art of Photography” and “The Essence of Photography” books to develop your unique photographic vision and philosophy.

Purchased as “used-very good” and it was near perfect! I wonder if anyone ever opened it. It even came shrink wrapped! The price was amazing for a book in this condition. As for the book and content, I love the way this is layed out. Lots of pictures, bullet points, diagrams, etc. It’s broken down into 20 manageable chapters. I’m only on chapter 2 and learning new things already despite doing photography as a hobby for 20 years. Photography is an immense topic and can’t be covered in one book, BUT… what a great book! It can totally be used on its own or as a guide if you want to go deeper on the topics. Personally, I’m supplementing with my camera manual, but it’s taking me through the right topics at the right pace. I also love the exercises.
