Description

This rare and classic book from 1699 details the relationship between parents and children and the authors view on the duties between them. Cotton Mather was an influential Puritan Minister from Boston Massachusetts who lived from 1663 to 1728. In ‘A Family Well Ordered’, Cotton Mather attempts to promote peace and harmony between parents and children by referring to biblical instructions. He goes into great detail in explaining the benefits of salvation and harmony and warns of an inevitable wrath when the parents or the children or both neglect their spiritual obligations to each other.

    Read this book!
If you are familiar with Voddie Bauchum’s church, ministry, or books, you understand what multi-generational faithfulness is. I read this book because he discusses it in one of his books. A Family Well Ordered is a great read for those who want to return to the way parenting was done many years ago. You know, back before the children were in charge. My wife and I began reading this book when we were trying for our first child. It really does help you to cast a vision of how you will raise your children with the goal of passing on the Faith to them so that they will do the same for their children. If you aren’t yet a parent but plan to be someday, read this book. If you are expecting a child soon, put down “What to Expect…” and read this book. Lastly, if you are already a parent and you are looking for a book about family structure because yours is falling apart, READ THIS BOOK NOW! It is not too long that any person couldn’t read in a few sittings.

Sometimes the old books are better
Short and easy to read but full of good instruction.Like CS Lewis said, “It is a good rule, after reading a new book, never to allow yourself another new one till you have read an old one in between. If that is too much for you, you should at least read one old one to every three new ones.Every age has its own outlook. It is specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes. We all, therefore, need the books that will correct the characteristic mistakes of our own period. And that means the old books. All contemporary writers share to some extent the contemporary outlook–even those, like myself, who seem most opposed to it.”

    I love this book
I love this book. Puritans are good for one thing. Admonishment and this they do very well. I read this book a few times a year and use it as a resource when discipling other believers. It truly is blessed by God. Evey Husband/Father needs to read this and take heed.

    Spine not labeled
Good reprint of a classic. Only complaint is that there is no text on the spine – have to label it myself so I can find it on my bookshelf. For that reason alone I wouldn’t buy it again. Otherwise a good copy.

This book has solid practical parenting advice from an age …
This book has solid practical parenting advice from an age when people managed to raise children who were, as a general rule, an asset to the society in which they took part. Despite our technology and so called education today, we can’t seem to manage to raise a generation of children who are anything more than a burden to the society in which they were born. It is time to go back to what works!
